workshops evaluations

Workshop 1 : Adding a voice over

For this Workshop the task was to find a scene from  a film about a minute in length and add a voice over to the scene which could either have been an narration of the scene from a characters perspective or could me an on going in dialog  from inside the characters mind. The scene I chose to use was from the film Public fiction,  the scene was when Vincent takes Mia out to  dinner .For creating my voice over i recorded my dialog use the microphone in my headphones and Garage band, however this probably wasn't the best method for recording my voice over as it picked up a substantial amount of background noise  . Once i had recorded my voice over i had to make sure it was in sync with the scene it look servile attempts to get this right. The way in which I could have improved this is voice over would be recording my voice over in an actual  recording booth as it would prevent picking up background and would also make my recording sound much clearer.

Workshop 2 :Dubbing Dialogue

In this Workshop the goal was to recreate the conversion between two characters in a film scene and replace there original recording with a new recording.  For this workshop we worked in groups of 3 my group was mad up of me, Adam and Terrell. The scene we choose to work with was form  the Godfather part 2, in this scene Michael and Kay are discussing Michael's family business. The firsts thing we did was write down word or word the dialog used in this scene once, we had done this we went to record in an empty room as an effort to tried and prevent from picking up back ground noise. To record the song we used an I phone as it has a better microphone than my Samsung. Once we had recorded the audio it was time to add the new audio to the original scene this part took very little time as the dialog was very easy to sync up. We could have improved this workshop was by using a professional microphone and a room with sound baffling to give use clearer audio.  However the copy i had put on my usb got corrupted so i had to to do a completely new scene just by my self, the scene i chose was from ghost world. The way i went about recording the scene was recording each sentence individually then syncing it up using premier pro.

Workshop 3 :Adding music
Workshop 3 was all about adding music to a scene to help give the scene a certain tone and mood. For my first scene I choose a scene from no country for old men, the reason i choose this scene is that i really enjoyed the film when I watch it originally. The scene was extremely dark and full of tension so I chose to use a horror score from youtube. Then I changed the levels so that the scene was ever more tense. When I first added the music to the scene it didn't really fit as the music was over power as it was far to loud and kind of drain the tension from the scene so i raised and lowered the envelope nodes of the horror score so that it would rise during parts of the clip that where especially tense to make the scene fell like the score was actually part of the original film. The way i went about this by using garage band so i could go into the audio a raise and lower the specific parts i need for the film scene.

For my second scene i took the intro scene from Alien a created the score all by myself using garage band, the way in which i went about this was by using garage bands in built key and choose the synthesizers keyboard to help create a si-fi score for the film. Once i had recorded the new score I had to make sure the score would fade out with the scene to do this  I lower the audio  levels toward the end of the scene. I could have greatly improved this process is if I used and actual keyboard and a range of different sounds.

Workshop 4 :Adding Sound effects

For this Workshop  the aim was to recreate all the sound in scene using new sounds. The scene I worked on was from the film The Conjuring 2 . To get the sounds to recreate all the sounds in the scene i used  the site free sound as well as youtube. This was a very long and painstaking processes as I had to long through the free sound library to find an accurate  sound for each sound and sometimes  I would used to a sound that is barely  similar to the original sound. The way in which i could have improved this workshop is by having longer time to look through the free sound  library.

Additional Workshop :Recording an Interview

In this workshop we had to record three interviews in different areas of the collage and talk about the varying  sound quality.  For this workshop we worked in groups of three my group was consisted of me, JJ and Terrel. For each interview Terrel would be the interviewer and either me or JJ was behind the camera. The first thing we did was write a script.

Script
Terrel: With weed recently being legalised in LA, do you think it should be legalised in the UK?
JJ: Yes I do
Terrel: What's your reasons for this?
JJ: Because it has a lot of medical attributes
Terrel: What do you say to the people who say legalising weed would cause crime?
JJ: i believe if weed is legal there would be less crime because its coming from the government
Terrel: How would the legalisation of weed affect you personally?
JJ: it will allow me to be able to try weed recreationally and medically without being illegal

Terrel: With weed recently being legalised in LA, do you think it should be legalised in the UK?
Noah: Hell yeah
Terrel: What's your reasons for this?
Noah: It's really relaxing. It's a flavour enhancer and it solves all your problems
Terrel: What do you say to the people who say legalising weed would cause crime?
Noah: Less people would be selling weed
Terrel: How would the legalisation of weed affect you personally?
Noah: It would just be easier for me to buy it

Terrel: With weed recently being legalised in LA, do you think it should be legalised in the UK?
Kieran: I disagree
Terrel: What's your reasons for this?
Kieran: I blame it on the media
Terrel: What do you say to the people who say legalising weed would cause crime?
Kieran: I can see it being quite likely
Terrel: How would the legalisation of weed affect you personally?
Kieran: It stains to your clothing, depending on what your wearing

For the recording we used a iPhone 8 the quality of the recordings all deepened the location we recorded at as we see this as when we recorded JJ's in a smaller class room with all the doors closed meaning that it sounded clearer but when we recorded mine we sat on the stairs which where in an open area meaning that the sound quality is really poor. When we recorded Kieran's one  it was in Davids media room meaning that it was in a large close space meaning that the sound was decent. The way in which we could improve this is by using microphones attached to both Terrel and the interviewer this would have greatly improved the sound another way that would help improve this is by recording by in smaller area.
